Andriessen

Installation company makes major efficiency gains with 4PS

With the pressure generated by the economic downturn and with competition becoming fiercer, making sure your business processes were as efficient as possible seemed the logical thing to concentrate on for Andriessen. The management team at Andriessen describes the process they went through and explain why 4PS was the natural choice for their business.

The Company

Installation contractors Andriessen BV, based in Houten in the Netherlands, is a company with an illustrious history. To ensure they had a bright future, the management team made the decision to introduce a new business system. Andriessen is a total installation contractor that provides services that cover the entire range of mechanical engineering and electrotechnical installations. They get involved in the installation of a wide range of equipment including climate and air conditioning, cold storage, central heating, inground storage systems, heat pump installations, bathroom fittings, water treatment systems, steam systems, fire protection and sprinkler installations, technical gases, combined heat and power systems, energy management, measurement and control plus building management systems.

Examples of their work include such as the Galgewaard stadium in Utrecht with surrounding buildings, the Sportboulevard in
Dordrecht (the largest indoor sports complex in the Netherlands) and the indoor cycling athletics hall, Omnisport in Apeldoorn. The company's 200 employees deliver work that meets the most current requirements for quality and sustainability – low-energy, environmentally considerate, flexible, efficient and reliable. Their strength lies in their highly skilled engineering team. The company employs very experienced and technically expert engineers who work to demanding standards in the most complex projects.

The Challenge

When a new management team took over in 2006 they were faced with a company that, in the past 10 years, had only gone through a very basic development with regard to its processes and ICT. With this in mind, Ad Vossenaar (CEO), Joost den Otter (Operations Manager) and Dennis Tamse (Financial Controller) decided to embark on a search for the next business system for Andriessen.

The new team realised at the outset that, if they were to convince the Board that the investment was worth making, the system they chose had to deliver real benefits. The improvements would have to come from increased efficiency. Ad Vossenaar explains their thinking:

'Now that the prices are under even more pressure because of the economic climate, this has become even more urgent.'

With the pressure generated by the economic downturn and with competition becoming fiercer, making sure your business processes were as efficient as possible seemed the logical thing to concentrate on for Andriessen. The management team at Andriessen describes the process they went through and explain why 4PS was the natural choice for their business.

'In the past three years we have managed to streamline our processes to such an extent that our margin has improved by almost 5%. That is a huge improvement, but we are only halfway there. As far as we are concerned, with 4PS in place, we can double the percentage improvement in margins we've seen to date.'
Joost den Otter (Operations Manager)

The market is becoming fiercer, faster and more transparent. Consequently, you really need to be up to date with your analysis and figures – especially at project level where it is of crucial importance to know the exact extent of your liabilities and options, and what the actual state of affairs is. Dennis Tamse struggled with the old system:

'The main problem was that internally there was no integration. There had been huge improvements, but we were still working with a range of different applications. This meant we spent too much time checking data. Instead of discussing the actual project, we were constantly trying to reconcile our figures!
And our project leaders had far too much administration to deal with. They needed to devote all their time to engineering. To do this they had to have the right tools, so as much administrative work as possible was taken away from their daily work. There were three serious candidates, of which 4PS was one. The final choice was not really that hard. We invited all three parties for a presentation. 4PS immediately stood out from the others.'

Why was 4PS that much better than the rest? Joost den Otter explains:

'They know the world of installations inside out. They are market leaders, and they have an amazingly impressive reference list of similar companies to ours. Their implementation model is well thought out. The questions, the pitfalls, getting staff involved and accepting the system are all part of their implementation style. However, the ultimate decision was only taken after very careful consideration. The initial orientation with the management team was followed by a more comprehensive presentation to a select group of users that covered all the functional areas that were important to us. Our most critical members of staff were involved, but even they were given satisfactory answers to all their questions. They were very positive.'

Only after a second meeting at management level, which covered issues such as project management and the nature of the implementation procedure, did they settle the deal.
